Controlling Stress
Controlling Stress:
Healthy living is not just eating the right kind of food; it is a way of life based on four principles or four lifestyle habits. The four habits are:
- Eating right kind of food.
- Regular exercises
- Being stress free
- Reading the updates on this site regularly

Friendly-tips.com has already dealt with eating smart & exercising; today we will look into some simple tips to reduce stress.
Being stress free would mean abstaining from certain stress inducers & cultivating stress bursting habits.
Let’s look at these stress inducers & de-stressors.
Stress inducers (Food):
- Products with caffeine like tea, coffee, energy drinks etc – Try limiting your intake of these products.
- Refined Sugar – This is one food that has absolutely no benefit to the body. Do strictly monitor sugar intake.
- Salt – Salt & any other product that has more salt -like junk food, cured meats & pickles can cause emotional instability if consumed in excess.
De-stressors (Food):
- Raw food – It is recommended that 70% of the food we consume should be raw food.
- Carbohydrate – Carbohydrate rich food like potato, brown rice & other whole grains have a calming effect on our brains.
- Fiber rich food like oats & nuts – Fiber would help in relieving cramps & constipation that often sets in as a result of stress.
Stress inducers (Lifestyle Habits):
Procrastinating – By doing this we are constantly thinking about it rather than completing the task, this certainly can’t be good for the brain. Studies have proven that procrastinating can lead to chronic stress
Sedentary lifestyle is the biggest stress inducer – Watching too much of television & being an internet addict will cause unnecessary stress.
De-stressors (Lifestyle Habits):
“To- do list” will do wonders in controlling the stress. Click here to read “Tips on using a to-do list”
Physical activities like walking or jogging. Human body is meant to be active & perspiration is a great de-stressor. Read here on “How to stay fit in office”
Here are some more friendly –tips to reduce stress:
- Excessive smoking & drinking are the biggest contributors to stress in today’s world. Abstain from them or at least do it in moderation.
- The activity we do in first five minutes of the day determines how our entire day will be. Develop a habit to get up 15 minutes earlier than usual, this additional time will ensure that you do not rush into each activity & be stressed the whole day.
- Choose friends wisely – Friends who always complain & find fault in things around us will cause unwarranted stress. Surround yourself with positive people/friends.
- Practice breathing exercise: Proper breathing will give us more energy, improves blood circulation & also calm the nervous system. 5 minutes of focused deep breathing, where you breathe in to the count of five & then breathe out. While doing this, keep your focus on the air going in & out of the lungs. This is the best stress reliever that I can suggest.
Of course if you are serious about distressing, you may also consider the “Pranayama yog”.
Yeah learning Yoga & watching Shilpa – This is waht I call a de-stress combo package ! ![]()

Here what I have found about STRESS by all means read it, its kind of a medical and scientific explanation of STRESS and STRESS BUSTERS.
Stress is a pattern of ‘stone age’ reactions that occur in response to stressor exposure. It prepares the human organism for fight or flight – i.e. for physical activity. It is a kind of ‘revving up’ or ‘stepping on the gas’ When confronted with a stressor, hormones are released into the blood stream which will cause physiological responses designed to improve physical and mental performance OK. So feelings of stress can sometimes be a good thing, because it generally improves performance. The stress response is normally self regulating once the danger is gone. But, physical threats are not the only things to trigger this response.
Psychological ‘threats’ associated with work, home life, interpersonal relationships major life changes, illness etc can set off the same alarm system. These ‘threats’ tend to be prolonged, consequently you may be running on the flight or fight reaction longer than it is intended to operate.
Finally some words of WISDOM from the Shaman of Stress
DON’T BE OVER-CONTROLLING
Don’t try to control events or other people. Many circumstances in life are beyond your control, particularly the behavior of others. Consider that we live in an imperfect world. Learn to accept what is, for now, until the time comes when perhaps you can change things.
AND FINALLY
Maintain your sense of humor. This includes the ability to laugh at yourself. Watch a funny movie: the sillier the plot the better. The act of laughing helps your body fight stress in a number of ways.

After reading this article my husband is relegiously into yoga. But the problem is, he needs to watch Shilpa shetty and does it along with video…hihihhhi. I thought yoga needs to be done where there is some fresh air circulations. Think we may have invest in open air theatre…
If Goji is gooseberry (nelli), then it doen’t suits for all.

Dear Anirudh
You are right. Stress was just a “self reviving” mechanism during “stone age”. But we have crossed that self regulating danger zone way back and alarm has rang long long time back! We ain’t gonna look at those years now. Stress has become integral part of our modern life and most dangerous as well. The statement ” don’t control event of others” is only one “negligible way” compared to infinite other ways! Indeed, laughter is a good therapy.

Nice article. You have very valid points. Work related stress is very high these days. However, Shilpa’s pranayama only rises the pressure. that should be for some one with low BP….HAHAHAHA

goji berry is not a gooseberry instead its a family of wolfberry ( i guess by the name it sounds stonger than the goose lol), anyways, so far with the help of the science, studies shows that the only side effect of goji is “you wont help but to smile
”…
