Tips to detoxify naturally

A colleague of mine was recently enquiring about a 10 day detoxifying clinic. Her argument was that complete detoxification is not possible in our normal day to day routine.

I beg to differ on this. We have been fooled into thinking that we need help from colon cleansers, fasting or detox clinics to detoxify our body. Detoxifying is indeed an important function of our body & even without our knowledge many of our organs are working 24X7 to eliminate toxins.

Some parts of our body that play an active role in detoxification are:

  • Skin
  • Nose
  • Lungs
  • Liver
  • Lymph Nodes
  • Kidney & many more

One must also understand that toxin are only external (Exogenous Toxins) but also Toxins that are created within our body (Endogenous Toxins).

Exogenous Toxins are usually ingested, inhaled or absorbed by us in the form of refined food, counter drugs, tobacco, cosmetics etc.  Endogenous Toxins are usually the result of our bodies’ metabolic activities & stress.  Human body is very efficient in eliminating toxins on a regular basic & thus preventing any harm to us from toxins.  However, problem occur when our rate of toxin intake & production become more than the rate of toxin excretion.  These excess toxins are initially stored in the fat tissues.  If you notice any cyst formation or tumor forming in the body, these are indications that you need to pay attention to detoxify your body.  Other body signs that should alert you to your toxin levels are, skin irritation, irritation in bowel movement, nasal congestion, diarrhea, ear infection, etc.  Don’t neglect these initial symptoms, as these may lead to more serious diseases starting from joint pain & may even lead up to cancer!  In fact accumulation of toxins is the major cause of disease in our body.

3 tips to detoxify naturally:

  1. Drink lots of fluids:  if you are thinking about “how much water?” then you are on the wrong path.  Drink when you are thirsty & also drink when you are not thirsty.  Did you know that as we age we don’t feel thirsty even though the body is dehydrated?  Good quality filtered, boiled or bottled water is the best bet to detoxify through the urinary tract.
  2. Exercise:   We detoxify majorly through skin by sweating.  Exercise not only helps the lymph to circulate better but also releases harmful toxins through sweat glands. Walk, run, climb stairs… do whatever you need to do to sweat. Exercise will also help to reduce our stress levels thus resulting in lower number of endogenous toxins
  3. Eat to detoxify: Avoid all food with preservatives-go organic, avoid processed food & red meats.  Go for food with high amounts of fiber & antioxidants.  These food products are easily available.  Green tea, vitamin C, garlic & coriander (Cilantro) are common ingredients which are available in every season & present worldwide.  Green leafy vegetables are a good source of antioxidants too.   But the best way to detoxify is to eat alkaline food.  The only source of alkaline food that I am aware of is fresh fruits.  Eat lots of fruits to stay away from diseases. I remember a nursery rhyme which said “An apple a day keeps the doctor away!” :oops:   Guess most of us forget this when we grow up! How we eat our food is also important. When we chew our food properly, unhealthy gut will affect the regularity of toxin elimination. Chewing food properly, combined with sufficient water & fiber & probiotic food, will ensure a healthy gut & disease free body too!
